Language

Language plays a critical role in shaping our spaces and interactions. This principle emphasises the use of clear, inclusive language that reflects the commitment to access and inclusivity. By being transparent in our communication and considering how we use terms like ‘mother’, ‘women’ and ‘integrated care’, we ensure that language is not a barrier but a tool for understanding and connection.

Suggested Applications

  • Maintain a glossary of key terms on your platform to ensure shared understanding, support clarity and inclusivity. (Check out our Glossary and feel free to adapt it to your platform as appropriate.)
  • Acknowledge all gender identities in this work – while not erasing the issues that have historically affected women – alternating between terms such as ‘mothers’ and ‘parents’, ‘women’ and ‘people’, or ‘women’ and ‘birthing people’, depending on context.
  • Clearly explain project-specific language or sector specialised terms in accessible forms, both online and in person.
